How Many Carries Are Looking for a Samantha, Miranda, or Charlotte? June 13, 2008

My City Sisters, Where Women Find New FriendsWith the very popular ‘Sex and the City’ movie showing in theaters around the world, it makes a person wonder how much of this is reality? How many women have friends like this, or is it just something we all desire? From my experience in talking to other women, at least in the United States, it seems to be something we desire, but do not have. With our mobile society it is becoming increasingly difficult to find and maintain good friendships. You know, the kind you can call for a quick coffee, a movie, or even a road trip.Women in the United States seem to at a roadblock when it comes to meeting new female friends. If you do not work with them, live next to them, go to church with them, how do you meet? People, and women in particular, are very busy. Between our busy work schedules, and for some, family demands, it is hard enough to find the time for “us” time, much less friend time.

We, as women, don’t go sit in bars alone hoping to meet people, at least not very often. Especially if we are looking for female friends since we are likely to be the only female sitting there. If you do go, some random guy will think you are there to meet him!

So, how do we meet new friends? At the gym, the bookstore, the coffee shop? Do people really strike up conversations with one another in these places? If you have children, you may be able to meet other women through school and sport activities your children are involved in, but they are probably just as busy as you. On-line dating has worked for many in finding the love of their life, so why not a website for women to find friends? My City Sisters is hoping to fill that need. A website that has just launched, it is determined to be the place “Where Women Find New Friends”.

For new members, they offer a 1 week free trial membership, but during the launch phase, they are offering the first 100 women who sign up a totally free one year membership with full member benefits.

What always struck me as strange is that these four women seemed to all value each friendship equally – how often does that happen? My best friend and I fit into the molds of two of those characters (I’d say Miranda and Charlotte with a twist of Carrie) but I can’t think of anyone else that can fit into a 4 person formula.

It is fiction. All actreses and writers have emphasized this and the fact that these characters (especially Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte) are very much so an exaggeration of a type of woman.

I’m a student at NYU and I could think of a few girls who go to bars to meet guys. But like you mentioned in the entry, its very rare that you strike up conversation with a stranger at a bookstore or any other location.
